Columbus Goodguys Nationals 2010

The Columbus Goodguys Nationals was a great show. Friday’s rain didn’t seemto deter the street rodders nor the spectators. I believe everyone was up for agood car show, meeting up with old friends, as well as making new ones. Despitethe rain everyone in attendance seemed to have a good time. Once the rain camethrough on Friday the weather was perfect for the Midwest, mid 80’s with a nicebreeze to keep everyone cooled down.

Saturday ended with the crowning of tis years 2010 Street Rod of the Year andStreet Machine of the Year. This years street rod winner is Jerry Magnuson fromCA, and this years street machine winner is Karen Leisinger from Wall Lake, SD.Karen makes history being the first woman to capture the title of Street Machineof the Year, what an accomplishment for her!

We have asked you, the viewer, what kind of articles you want in the magazine. Here are some of the feedback LIA Magazine received:

A story on the men who support, encourage, and promote women in racing. A "Stand by your Woman" column each month.
Women in automobile manufacturing industry, executives, designers, etc.
Hot Rodding women, online women, magazine based, TV, radio, about their jobs, etc. Albuquerque N.M. traffic reporter radio gal Helen Wheels, say her name fast and it's Hell on Wheels.
Standings for any woman that raced the previous weekend, drag, circle track, indy car, F1, any racer, motorcycle, Bonneville, etc.
Young college age women into racing at local tracks, etc
The women that did it first, fastest, first national win, first to start, etc
Young college age women into racing at local tracks, etc

Young go-cart, drag racing girl racers, accomplishments, etc.

For the woman of the month idea...I think she should be called LIA's Feature "Lady" of the Month...just a thought....
I would like to see some how to's on trouble-shooting Step by step
cover the women who have found success and earned respect throughout the industry and get their stories
There are SEMA women's groups, DRAW, and other such organizations to find subjects to profile
Beyond the great female race drivers there are successful businesswomen, legendary racetrack gals who earned respect (like Linda V. and Jungle Pam) and young ladies who are forging their own respectable paths (like the gal who did the traditional hot rod movie and documented its progress here on the HAM
have some articles featuring the gals across the country that are really into Traditional cars
My girlfriend and I went to a car cruise sat. nite and found several woman owners who had great stories about their passion for hot rod and customs
Maybe an ongoing column on real local women across the country or wherever talking about their rides. As much I love history, I need the visuals, maybe a monthly contest for photos of women and their rides
I’d love articles of ladies cars and the work they have done on their cars. Tech articles and women involved in the early hot rodding/ Kustom days would be great too. Maybe even interviews with the wives/girlfriends/daughters of the old Racers and Kustomisers
I would love to see articles/interviews of the wives/daughters of the ol timers. Maybe even articles of the ol' "Track Girls" and "Flag Girls" the list goes on and on
I can remember names like Vicky Woods and Denise McCluggage that raced and were factory test drivers in the Fifties and Sixties. You might want to look at the ladies that race at Bonneville and El Mirage. The car that I'm running was previously driven by a real great lady Marge Price. I know they all have a lot of very interesting stories...

Believe, Dream, Imagine

Good day to all you gals and guys out there who are a part of the automotive industry. I wanted to stop and take the time to let many of you know what has happened with LIA Magazine since March and what we are working on to help shape the beginnings of the e-zine.

We are trying to attend as many shows as possible to get the word out about the magazine. Those of you who haven’t stopped and talked to us please feel free to bend our ear. We need you, the viewers, to let us know what type of articles you’d like us to put in the magazine. I stated before and will say it again to all of you. We are wanting to get the wheel in motion for a networking to begin amongst women. I want all of you to realize this is the opportunity to get answers to your questions, share your thoughts and ideas, tell us who needs to be recognized for their involvement in the industry and why. This magazine is geared toward women, however, our intent is not to exclude the men. I wouldn’t be doing what I am today if it wasn’t for all my support from my husband. I know for a fact that there are many other men out there that have their significant other that is involved in the automotive industry. Please let us know who you are and how they are participating in the sport. Many are excited and proud to be involved in this great industry. Please tell us who you are and what your involvement is with the industry.

Since we launched the magazine in March we’ve met many new friends and caught up with all of our old friends. When we first started we thought the online magazine would be published monthly. We realized quickly that there wouldn’t be enough material to do that in the beginning. So, at least for the first year we know that the magazine will be published bi-monthly. From time to time we will add to the current published issue, such as; more photos of an event, press release, new products, etc.

We know here at the magazine we are in the beginning stages of forming this baby, LIA Magazine, to be the best it can possibly be for all of you viewers. There will be crawling, walking, and sometimes running at the various phases in the beginning workings of forming up this online magazine. All I ask is that all of you be patient with us and treat this like raising a child, because that is how we are treating LIA Magazine. If we all do that, then the magazine will grow into being its own great identity for all of us.

LIA Magazine says Thank You....

Hi Everyone,

No I haven't forgotten about the blog. I have been so busy trying to get the magazine up for all of you to see the first official issue. I apologize that it took me a while, however, I had a few bugs to work out. I also needed to get the articles together, which was difficult to find the material in the beginning since the season just started.That being said please review all the sections and let me know what you link.

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has been very helpful in supporting the start-up of the Ladies in Autosport online publication.Please enjoy and remember we are just getting started. Indy Goodguys June 12-14

LIA Magazine's - Heading to Indy Goodguys

I've been very busy getting ready for the official launching of the magazine to the public. This month is the first official issue. We are heading down to Indy this weekend for the Indy Goodguys show. Will you be in attendance? I would love to meet up with all you gals and guys at the show or the Adams Mark. We also plan to visit with the Road Rockets on Saturday.

Currently for the magazine we have 3 or 4 categories/columns we are wanting to publish every month - Events/Happenings (This can include building a car, testing a car at the track before a race, event itself, etc.), How Tos, Features (This can be race cars, hot rods, bikes, etc.), and Who's Who.

Roseville Hot Rod High - '51 Ford Coupe

When we came upon this nice and clean 1951 Ford Sedan, we all thought wow this is a really neat custom. As we took a closer look we soon realized that it was built by gals and guys from Roseville High School out of Roseville, Michigan.

Thank you to all of you that I spoke with at the Detroit Autorama Show. All of your support, encouragement, and ideas were greatly appreciated. Welcome - Needing Women Young and Old

Welcome to the blog for LIA Magazine, Ladies in Autosports. My name is Julia Aschenberg and I am the proud owner of LIA Magazine. The reason for this blog is to find a common interest between women in the field of Autosports. Therefore, this forum is for women, young and old, to communicate with each other about their particular interest, history, or background in Autosports. Men who want to share anything about a lady in their life are also encouraged to participate.

I want to begin this blog by communicating with all of you my background history in the world of Autosports. John, my husband, handed me my first introduction to drag racing. Years ago when we were both single, he asked me out on a date to go with him to the NHRA U. S. Nationals at Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. John was very patient with me that day explaining the concept of drag racing in the various categories. My husband also introduced the world of photography to me that day. John had a camera with him, which he intended to take pictures of the day's happenings, however, he didn't photograph much that day since he was busy sharing with me his love of drag racing. I ended up picking up his camera to capture the events for the day. Therefore, that day began my love for Autosports as well as photography.

After a few years of attending the NHRA U.S. Nationals, with camera in hand snapping the day's happenings, I was able to pick out the media for the magazines covering the event. One year I approached a staff member to ask what it would take for me to freelance for the magazines. After a lengthy discussion of all the cons, he soon realized that I wasn't discouraged from trying my hand at freelancing. The staff member was nice enough to give me his phone number to make contact with him in a few weeks to receive an assignment. This job would be the deciding factor if I would or wouldn't like doing event coverage, along with shooting car features for magazines. In 1990 I was given my first assignment. I am proud to say this past year made my nineteenth year of freelancing for the magazines. Therefore, yes I loved all aspects of the job in 1990 and still do today. Going to the shows through the years gave my husband and I many things that we couldn't get in any other job. We truly respect the many people we have met through the years. They unselfishly shared their love of Autosports along with the vision they have for creating their own automotive art. We respect their art as many have respected my vision in photographing their masterpiece. Through the many years of freelancing, we have acquired some great friendships across the world that might not have been possible had we not done the work for the magazines.

Over the course of nineteen years, I have seen many changes take place in the Autosports industry. When I first began freelancing for the magazines I never gave any consideration that I was delving into an industry that was a male dominated sport . Little did I realize that I could be making history for other women in the future wanting to do the same line of work. Some might possibly call me a pioneer in the field of freelancing for the Autosports industry. Similar to Shirley Muldowney, and Judy Lilly in drag racing or Lynn St James and Janet Guthrie in Indy cart racing to name a few. During those nineteen years, there were times when I began back at ground zero. Reproving myself to the magazines again that I am quite capable of doing the job! Just like many of you women and men, I have had my heartaches; however, there were angels along the way who helped me out by giving me breaks.

This brings me back to my reason why I'm doing LIA Magazine - Ladies in Autosports. The time has come for women in the industry of Autosports to get recognition for their accomplishments that go unnoticed. We also need to band together so other women coming into this great sport do not repeat our mistakes by sharing our valuable information. Please help me to get the word out about LIA Magazine. Let me know the kind of things that you would like to see in the online magazine. My hope is that by the sharing of your ideas from all walks of the automotive industry this will help us to shape the best direction for the online LIA Magazine. It will not only help us to put out a quality classy infotainment magazine, but you the viewer or reader will benefit from the valuable content available to all. Come on ladies lets make this magazine one class act for all of us. This is the 21st century!
